Who We Are
A Rules official ensures the game is played according to the rules set by governing bodies like the USGA and the R&A. Their main duties include assisting players, making rulings on complex situations, ensuring the game runs smoothly, and addressing any rule violations they observe or that are reported to them.
To become a Rules Official, you need to pass the USGA Rules Exam, attend workshops or courses, and keep your certification up to date by recertifying regularly and participating in events.
What We Do
The role of a Rules Official is to help players follow the rules during competitions. Helping players avoid rules breaches rather than penalizing them after the fact. OGA Official's work together to make sure that the rulings are given. Communication is very important, if an OGA Official is unsure about a rule, they should check with another Official. This helps avoid mistakes, keeps rulings consistent, removes personal bias, and shows a commitment to applying the rules correctly. Officials should always talk to another official about the situation and what they plan to do, even for simple rulings. OGA Officials are key to ensuring that a competition is administered equitably.
